Getting to the bottom of it.

Uniform plastic bottles not only look better than the usual shampoo and soap containers, but they also fit more neatly in storage devices, such as the hanging wire basket.

I love getting to the bottom of things. Of products and containers that is. Not drama or problems – if that’s what you were thinking (though, let's be honest, I sometimes like that too). Recently my co-workers were talking about how they have 5+ years worth of random shampoo, conditioner and lotion bottles that they’ve finally decided they need to use up.

That people had half used products of any number was shocking to me. I’m the type that will intentionally use more shampoo than I need in order to get to the bottom of the bottle faster (admittedly, this is not a good strategy). The thing is, I LOVE using up every last drop of a product and the feeling that comes with throwing that container in the trash (or recycling bin – I’m working on getting better at this, but that’s another post). I typically only purchase what Mike and I need, one “product” ahead at a time - and I tend to be pretty strict with Mike (and myself) that we “use what we have” first.

I have my mother to thank for that. She was crazy about using stuff up, even putting water in the soap dispenser when it was nearly finished. That’s the WORST. Have you ever gone to wash your hands, turned on the sink, pushed down the soap dispenser and then BAM. Soap shoots everywhere. Especially on your stomach. And maybe on a few choice areas on your chest.  Awesome.  Especially when you’re walking out of the bathroom to go to a job interview. Or you’re on a first date.  Or you’ve ran out of laundry and that’s the only clean shirt you have left and it’s dry clean only and you have to give a big speech in class that day.

No! I’m not bitter! Mom – I LOVE that you did that. I attribute you putting water in the soap as the main reason I’m so humble today. Thank you!

Personally, I prefer the “cut the top off and stick your hand in the bottle to dredge out any remaining soap” trick. Much less dangerous.

Anyway, I’m not quite as crazy resourceful as my mother when it comes to using things up, but I do love the satisfaction of a good, empty container.  How about you? Are you the “use what you have” kind of person, or do you love switching it up half way through a bottle?
