For my
birthday, the hubs got me a sewing machine. I hadn't sewn since about seventh
grade (there's a horror story to why I quit, but I'll save that for another
day). Owning your own home, you quickly begin to realize how expensive
store-bought things are: curtains, pillow covers, cloth napkins, basically
anything with fabric. So if you're like me, you have to DIY in order to keep up
with your decorating addiction, indecisiveness, fickleness?
Something
like that.
So, still
scared from the seventh grade sewing incident, I turned to hem tape (this stuff was my favorite).
And I gotta give it some love - it's pretty much magic, but as I began
trying to do more complex projects, hem tape just wasn't cutting it. Enter:
Laura sending Mike an email with a direct link to the exact sewing machine
she wanted for her birthday with the text: "BUY THIS FOR ME OR
DIE."
I may
have written it a bit differently than that, but I got my point across. So like
the good husband he is, about a week later a boxed-up, brand-new sewing machine
lands on our doorstep. I get home from work before the engineer does, so when I
went out to check the mail, I threw my hands on my hips and did a little jig
when my eye spotted the machine.
Like a
good girl, I waited until my actual birthday to open it,
actually I waited until about a month after my birthday to open it - I was a
bit scared, okay, petrified of it. Although I did tons of research and read all
390 of the Amazon reviews that said "This is the best machine for
beginners EVER," I still couldn't bring myself to sit down and try it out.
Well I'm
happy to report I've fully overcome my phobia of sewing machines and it has now
taken permanent residency in our dining room, where I am pumping out
projects faster than Mike can keep up with our credit card bills for the
fabric. (They sell SUCH cute stuff online!)
Wanna
know which one I choose?
It's this
guy:

Get it here.
It's also the one $herdog got on Young House Love (Everyone, pleeeeeeeease tell me you follow that blog). Check it out on Amazon here.
While I
haven't used it for very long, I'm happy to report it lives up to the hype.
It's super simple, I even threaded the bobbin on the first try! Get excited for
a few tutorials (or links to tutorials. If you haven't figured it out by now;
never blindly trust my madness) in the coming weeks!
ps. Went to the Young House Love book signing last night - and it was definitely worth the 3.5 hour wait to meet those Pertersiks. Full recap tomorrow with all the deets.
